Beauty Mark: Once You Go Black…

I was in the MAC store on Armitage a month ago buying a bunch of things I couldn’t afford when the sales girl told me to come back in a few weeks for the launch of MAC’s Style Black collection. “It’s really cool stuff,” she said, “Everything’s black.” She meant everything – eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner, all the way down to lips and nails (not blush, of course – hopefully “homeless dirt-covered face” will never be a trend). And I looked at her like, “Girl, do you not see my (dyed) red hair, pale skin, and freckles? I could never do black makeup.”
But of course I love it and had to tell you guys about it. I saw an African-American girl on the Metra this past weekend with her MAC bag in hand trying on the 1. Black Knight Lipstick ($14) she just bought and it looked great on her – you definitely need a darker canvas to pull off lips this dark. MAC also has really pretty Glimmerglass lip gloss colors in black, gold, and dark purple for those lucky enough to look good in them.
For those of us on the paler side, we can try the black trend by playing up our eyes. The 2. Greasepaint Stick ($17.50) is getting great reviews. The black (the only color it comes in) is actually more of a really dark purple with a hint of shimmer. It glides on smooth and smudges easily for a quick smokey eye. You can also try the 3. Cream Colour Base ($16.50), which comes in both Black and Bat Black (a blackened burgundy with pink pearl).
For those that find going this dark intimidating, the easiest black look to pull off is likely on your nails. MAC included Nail Lacquers ($12) Nocturnelle (black cream color), 4. Seriously Hip (black with gold pearl), and Baby Goth Girl (black with pinkish purple frost) in the collection.
I own more MAC cosmetics than I care to admit to so maybe I’m biased but I love how cutting edge they are and at the same time user-friendly. Take a peek at some of their Style Black looks and see what you can come up with.
