Midwest Music: Lightning Love!
Lightning Love! is a band giving us what we won’t expect, as they lure you in with sweet, sweet melodies and then start to tell you about their bad day. And it is this quality that makes the three-piece from Ypsilanti, MI delightfully relatable. A lo-fi symphony of melancholic toe-tapping, Lightning’s frontwoman Leah Diehl sings of the winsome yearnings of early adulthood, that lead us to awkward dispositions and lonely nights.
Backed on drums and guitar by Ben Collins and Aaron Diehl the band sounds like the troubled twin of the Shangri-Las, if the 60s pop group had played in the dirty basements of Ypsi and sang about pissing in elevators. Likewise, Diehl’s keyboard is her storyteller and the rest of the band complements this musical nature with fluid beats and twanging guitars; making them a spring-sounding band for the winter months.
Their debut LP “November Birthday” is available at Encore Records and Underground Sounds in Ann Arbor, MI. Tomorrow night, Feb. 21 Lightning Love! is playing at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor with the Von Bondies. Show starts at 9:30 p.m. Daze, sway, enjoy.
