Midwest Music: Kommie Kilpatrick
I can remember sitting in high school history class having discussions about Alexander Burr and Sonic Youth with Derek Robertson, the bass player for Kommie Kilpatrick. I also remember dancing in rock n’ roll frathouses with longtime friends Zak Frieling and Teddy Stavridis. Now one of my few memories with Kit Sabo, the guitarist, involves sitting in an apartment watching people play Mortal Kombat before a Black Lips show, but I’m sure I’ll see him around…like Monday.
The reason all this “memory” stuff is important is because it describes the energy surrounding Kommie Kilpatrick. These Detroit ex-mayoral sons of punk like to have a good time and want to make sure their friends have just as good a time listening.
From playing GG Allin covers to my personal favorite “Girls at School” Kommie makes a promise of no return. They remind me of a more unrefined version of the Dictators; combining an early punk ethos with tales of being just plain “sick of the city”.
Their shows are wired crazy and boozy, so if you’re looking for a rough night out I am happy to point you in their direction. Their next show is Monday Feb. 16 at PJ’s Lager House in Detroit. They are playing with Turbo Fruits and The Decks. Bands start at 10 p.m. Kommie will be selling their album and tape…red tapes.
That’s the best picture ever of Jack Schmier.
Have to love the victoria house 😀
