Beauty: To Wash or Not to Wash…

A picture of jessica simpson and a bottle.

Over the last two weeks, since this stupid winter weather has come into my life, my quality of hair has gone way down. I used to be able to wash my hair like once maybe twice a week, and be fine. Which, by the way, I always thought was pretty awesome until I heard Jessica Simpson only washes hers once a month. Bitch!

So, anyway, now that I’m constantly wearing winter caps, my hair has gotten weirdly greasy and I have to wash it constantly. I hate it!

I know that I could use my Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo or even baby powder, but they always seem to make my hair look grey or just plain creepy.

Anyone else have this problem? If so, what’s your solution?

  • i got the uber greasy thing going on when i stopped shampooing as often, even after i was told things would get better. my stylist suggested an ACV rinse – which has been a life send. i shampoo once a week, maybe. the rest of the time i use a jar that holds one quart. I toss in a few tablespoons of ACV in the bottom and a drop of essential oil. While in the shower I fill it up with water and rinse my hair. thats it, thats all. the pH of ACV is close the hairs natural pH so it doesn’t over dry, but does a good job cutting grease.

the only tip is: if ur hair smells like vinegar after you’re done, you’ve used too much ACV.

also for brushes and combs, soak in warm water and a few drops of ammonia for ten minutes, at least once a week. cleans all oily bildup off, and prevents you from redistributing the oils while when you style.

Second, it just so happens I am a freelance hairstylist and I assist a celebrity hairstylist full time….so this one’s right up my alley…aaaannnnddd I’m going to so name drop and tip drop right now for your hair troubles :)!

Anyhoo….All that oil is is build up from your (prepare for jargon) sebaceous glands and it basically coats the outside of your hair….In short it’s oil from your scalp that builds up.
Clearly, you know this, but the less you wash the more build up. In some cases and races that’s a good thing! Hence the reason why “Black” girls don’t wash their hair as much! Our glands don’t secrete as much as others :(….that’s why they tend use a lot of serums and hair oil….and for me, my hair doesn’t even act right unless it’s filthy…(I know eeeeeeellll)!

Buuuttt for those ladies who are working with those over acting “glands” here are some great products and tips!

    1. As for as daily maintenance, look for products that contain alcohol–hairsprays (only if you wash less). Although it can dry your hair out dramatically–that’s a good thing in this case! It will help balance out some of those oils

    2. The commenter about ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) is so right…that will work like a God send….if you’re lazy or as posh as me, try: http://www.fitfuel.com/Clarifying_Shampoo-p-12447.html?zmac=89, this clarifying shampoo from Avalon organics is sooo major. It has lemon in it and other 100% vegetable ingredients…with “going green” being so sexy right now, that always helps!….(the secret is officially out)

annnnddd even better then making your own rinse, Frederic Fekkai actually makes a Apple Cider Clarifying shampoo, so you avoid that vinegar smell all together!!
Find it at Sephora or here: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P7695&cm_mmc=us_search-_-YahooPI-_-P7695-_-429399&srccode=cii_14934801&cpncode=24-14097059-2

Thank u…and goodnight :)! Good luck btw!
