Fashionism: McQueen Target-s the Midwest

“I always liked the idea of people in the Midwest wearingmy clothes. The idea of this upstart from London going where peoplehaven’t heard of me, I think that was interesting to me. I think it’squite adventurous of Target.â€
– Alexander McQueen on his upcoming capsule for Target.
When I read this quote on The Cut(via WWD), I was instantly excited for obvious reasons. One, Alexander McQueen(I repeat, ALEXANDER MCQUEEN) alludes to the possibility of fashion in the Midwest. Two, I’m a die-hard recessionista (READ: ex-fashionista who has succumb to the recession) that will be able to afford a piece of McQueen for my wardrobe.
Of course, I eagerly read down the page to see the reaction to McQueen’s statements and ,unshockingly, one of the first was a negative comment about people in the Midwest and how we “just don’t care as much” about what we wear.
Ha! I have to laugh.
It just goes to show that the stereotypes still hold true. People think that us “folks” in the middle of the country are sitting around in our sweatsuits all day, noshing on pieces of hay. My reaction to that is a big middle finger to the screen. So, if you’re a Midwestern fashionista, and this pisses you off as much as it does me. Sound off here…or there. Let people know that we are not style-less hillbillies!

  • I am from Minnesota and of course I am familiar with Alexander McQueen and all the other high end designers! It is the price tag that keeps mainstream Americans from wearing their clothes. Not our lack of style! In fact I would venture to say that our lack of funds leads to creativity in what we wear and how we put things together. We aren’t “label whores” that merely wear what others put in front of us. Period. End of Story.

  • It really irritates me when people make comments that midwesterners don’t know fashion. I mean just because we live in the middle of the country does not mean we are closed off from the rest of the world!! We know just as much about fashion and high end designers as anyone else… we’re just more creative with how we dress and we’re not “label whores” i guess?!
