Fast Fashion: A Recessionista's Best Friend

According to the International Herald Tribune “fast fashion”, like the stuff that comes out of the Forever 21’s and H & M’s of the world, is on the decline. Fashion experts think that the inexpensive, throw-away garments are “too cheap” and even “excessive” for the average consumer.
I don’t know what world these people are living in but the phrase “too cheap” is never uttered in mine. Unlike the wealthy sector of the fashion industry, spending (JUST) $9.99 on a dress. albeit at Forever 21, doesn’t bother me. In fact, I relish the idea. It’s not like I’m going to wear it more than a few times anyway, so what’s the difference?

  • What about the fact that the clothes are made from extremely low quality fabrics and with very low standards? Meaning that they don’t last long at all and end up in landfills. I use to agree 100% with this post, but seeing the how quickly the dye faded and the clothes fell apart from my “Forever” wardrobe I just had to bring up these points. What happened to the value of quality in our society?

  • I understand your point and I actually used to agree with investment pieces and buying quality over quantity. But, right now, with the economy the way it is, it’s an easy choice to make between (barely)paying your rent or buying a high quality LBD. I think the value of quality went down the drain when George Bush took office and we all started to struggle to pay the bills.
