Clowning Around…

I think the contemporary image of a clown is quite frightening. The tomato red hair, the floppy shoes, the painted on smile and that awful rubber nose are enough to give anyone chills.

However, the clown of yesteryear, in its simple palate of colors and heavy eye makeup is really very exciting. I think the most attractive thing about it is the huge neck ruff that every clown seems to wear. There is something sort of royal about it while at the same time being a total joke.

The black and white clown look even appeared at Erin Featherston’s Fall ’09 runway show in a black jumpsuit and ruffled blouse. Looks like Pagliacci is here to stay.
