EVERY single day I say this phrase or something similar, “The whole world is a hipsterâ€. I don’t know if that makes sense, so I’ll explain.
When I was young and grunge/punk rock/alternative/rave(you get the idea) it was not “coolâ€, for lack of a better word, by adult standards to be so. They just didn’t get it. All those subcultures I mentioned were youth cultures. You just wouldn’t see an adult with a flannel around their waist, a mohawk or Jnco pants.
These days, the times have changed. The newest subculture, hipster, has become a worldwide phenomenon.
Rappers like Jay Z and Kanye are wearing skinny jeans and nerd glasses while the entire nation hears a band playing in the background of a Bacardi commercial, aka Matt and Kim, who I saw preform in a shitty, rat-infested basement just a few years ago. Adding to my conspiracy theory is button-up-wearing, Nightly News anchor, Brian Williams, who has just started a new music blog, briTUNES.
BriTUNES was started to discover and uncover emerging musical acts along with some established artists. First to be interviewed was indie band, Deer Tick. And while I‘m not knocking the idea of giving small bands national media coverage, I just think it’s totally weird that this is going on.
I mean, if you think about it, the demographic of people reading Brian’s blog is probably white males, age 40+, definitely not the same demographic of people listening to Deer Tick’s music. Think, if that group happens to like what they hear they’ll most likely buy tickets to see them. That means me, you, and a bunch of old dudes are going to be hanging out together at places like Sub T and I’m just not down with that.
Maybe I’m taking this a little too seriously but briTUNES is just the icing on my hipster cake. I think indie and youth culture is getting bastardized and, if it doesn’t stop now, will most likely become extinct by the time I have children. I don’t like that idea one bit.
Am I just crazy? Thoughts?

  • its just a cycle as its always been for decades. once a subculture gets a lot of attention it becomes commercial and then strays from its original form and dies. from the beats in the 50s to the hippies and bohemians of 60s and 70s to the punks in the late 70s and 80s and etc, hipsters will surely die by the time you have kids but something new will take shape. its really just about clothing, and clothing is ever changing.

  • When I was in high school, all the “cool” kids were Abercrombie-swaddled prepsters. Now I see my younger sister’s cool friends and wouldn’tchaknowit, they’re all hipsters these days.

Yup, the rest of the world has taken notice.
