Plaid’s resurgence as the patterndu jour is not really surprising. Tough times call for tough fashion,and really, what’s tougher than grunge?
In celebration of JD Salinger’sbirthday (he turned 90 on January 1), here’s a look that not onlymodernizes the pattern, but really puts some formal “oomph†intoit. An early hipster if there ever was one, Holden Caulfield–withhis red hunting cap–would certainly have worn plaid. A product ofprep schools but ultimately disillusioned by phoniness, he was grungeeven before Kurt Cobain was. In honor of that, then, a melding of thetwo worlds–East Coast prep and hipster casual–to diversify the look.
Happy birthday, Mr. Salinger.
